In eastern Ukraine, childhood neighbors see their lives violently upended by a shifting front line. Natasha, a talented boxer, becomes a military paramedic. Angela, who lost her parents at a very young age, survives by smuggling goods across the front lines. Caught in a modern Greek tragedy, brothers Mark and Ruslan now fight on opposing sides, against each other. From the safety of his adoptive family in the United States, their youngest brother Daniil follows the war from afar. Filmed on 16mm over the course of more than a decade, *MARIINKA* begins long before the world witnessed the full-scale invasion. It is Pieter-Jan De Pue’s highly anticipated second feature film, following his award-winning debut feature.
“Mariinka,” a documentary by Pieter-Jan De Pue filmed over a decade in the midst of the war in Ukraine, won the Audience Award at the 2026 CPH:DOX festival as well as two awards at Millennium Docs Against Gravity in Poland.
