Jelin, a shepherd, is guided by a star to the barn where a couple, Mary and Joseph, are caring for their newborn child. Fear grips them all when they learn that King Herod wants to kill all male newborns, lest one of them usurp his throne. The character of Jelin first appeared in the Middle Ages in the very first “sacred mysteries”, the theatrical Christmas performances sung in the forecourts of Savoy churches.
