The work functions like a ritual: sound is treated in a non-“classical” way, using resonators and gestural percussion. Scelsi seeks an almost terrifying sonic “power,” incorporating inharmonic spectra and elements of noise as musical material. Rather than developing a melody, the piece emphasizes a tempo that is both static and dynamic, based on a slow pulse and gradual returns of textures, creating a sense of deep rhythm and incantation.
